The taxi driver who thwarted the escape of two robbers involved in the Cantonments robbery incident will receive a “handsome” reward, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command ASP Afia Tenge has announced.

At a press briefing following the robbery incident on Sunday, ASP Tenge revealed, “I have the directives of the Inspector-General of Police to announce that at an appropriate time, the taxi driver and all those who contributed to the arrest of the suspects will be handsomely rewarded.”

Former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings has since the incident congratulated the taxi driver for his brave action.

The two robbers, Obaleko Stanley, 35 and Oko Quarcoo, 30, attacked and shot a lady in her leg near the American Embassy at East Cantonments and tried to escape with her belongings.

The taxi driver, who was a witness to the robbery incident, pursued the two robbers who were escaping on a motorbike and crashed into them with his car, injuring the robbers and leading to their arrest.

They sustained fractures and are on admission at the Police Hospital.

The robbery is reported to have been orchestrated by one Gilbert Osabutey, 36, a supervisor at the Koala Shopping centre where the victim also worked as a sales girl.

Gilbert Osabutey and another accomplice, 28-year old Michael Doe Ahiataku, a security man, have been arrested and are in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.

The victim is currently on admission at the 37 military hospital and is responding to treatment.
